THE HAND
The hand is a universal symbol found on primitive rock art throughout world. It represents the artist's personal signature and the ability to bring forth what is desired. The hand is a fitting tribute to the first inhabitants of our neighborhood, the Native Americans.
THE SPIRAL
The spiral is an ancient, profound symbol open to numerous interpretations. It resembles the movement of waves and water and even sea shells. It is regarded as a sign that emanates life. It is considered a passage through which all energy flows spiritual and physical. Along with the circle, the spiral shares the continuity and cyclical movement. It is also associated with the whirlwind, thus thought of as a dynamic creative force.
Considering the fact that our neighborhood, Portage Park, is derived form the word, “portage” meaning to carry boats, supplies, etc., overland from one navigable water to another, the spiral is an appropriate symbol of the center. It was the Native Americans who were the first residents and carried their canoes over this area. |
