It was the painter and art educator Robert Henri who believed that there is asubtle, unconscious spirit that reflects and influences a community where the arts are celebrated. He felt that true artists of this community see their art as a calling that contributes to some greater good, associated with a sense of meaning that serves a higher purpose. As the director, I have witnessed this artistic generosity here at the Portage Park Center for the Arts. Every month at the PPCA is artist’s month and I personally witness this giving spirit in the over 60 artists who work here. I am grateful for each and every one of them!

Everything that passes by us in life
so swift, rare, and unequal

Is here gathered together in a world of poems,
pictures and great picture-cycles, in color
stone, and sound

To form a second, sublime world on earth

We can only experience beauty through art
for without art we should not know
that it exists
